History Family On the Fells Other Interests Biographical Snippets Back to home |
This section is devoted to personal accounts of some of Fred's interests outside of his academic work. The History section takes a look at his early years as a boy living in Yorkshire. This month the Family page provides a history of Fred's parents and their family life in the early part of the 20th century. Many people that came into contact with Fred would have known about his love for walking. Here in On the Fells we have an excerpt from a hand written note jotted down after one of his many climbs. Another of his sporting interests was with cricket about which you can read a letter to the Times he wrote in Other Interests. Fred's interests were very much a part of his continual intellectual inquiry into how and why things happened. His love of music was intense as was his passion for sport. Not only would his learning of rules, regulations or how things worked stimulate his own curiosity, he would readily take the time to convey his understanding to others. In the 1960's, whilst watching a baseball game, he noticed a family member didn't understand the format of play. After ascertaining that an explanation would be welcomed, he lowered the volume on the tv set and gave his own very simplified commentary of the rules and how they were applied. Years later when his son bought a sailboat, the first thing he wanted to know was, "is it seaworthy?". To make sure, he studied the literature of hull design and within a few days had calculated that indeed it was, "but some of the mathematics these designers use isn't the simplest". These are a few examples of life with Fred. Biographical Snippets hold further anecdotes and stories written by his friends and family.
